When you have been battling with an injury all day long, the last thing you need is for it to keep you up at night too. Sleep plays an important role in injury rehabilitation but unfortunately is often overlooked.

Is Sleeping A Pain? Sleep is vital for your body’s repair and maintenance. Unfortunately it is all too common that an individual’s sleep is interrupted by an injury that they are carrying. Having difficulty getting to sleep or being woken up in the night from pain are concerns that Physio’s often hear from their patients and is something that we aim to address immediately. Lack of quality sleep may amplify your pain and pain may disturb your sleep. It is a vicious cycle but one that Physiotherapy can help break.

Studies have shown that periods of sleep deprivation lowers an individuals pain tolerance. This means that a tired person may feel more intense pain with a less painful trigger. Sleep deprivation is also well associated with mood disturbances such as irritability, anxiety and depression. So there is little wonder that staying positive while recovering from an injury is challenging when your mood needs more sleep.

Here at PROHEALTH PHYSIO we recognise the value of a great night’s sleep and aim to get you back to being painfree and sleeping as quickly as possible. Contact our friendly team of physios to discuss.
