Understanding Manual Therapy
At PROHEALTH PHYSIO & FITNESS our Physiotherapists adopt a hands-on approach to treatment and rehabilitation. This approach is globally termed as manual therapy and it can be very useful during various phases of a client’s recovery in conjunction with exercise therapy.
A thorough assessment includes your physiotherapist palpating and mobilising muscles, tendons and joints to determine the quality of the tissue and if there are any areas of sensitivity, protective spasm, restriction, or laxity (increased movement). From this information, your physiotherapist can better understand your condition and suggest relevant treatment techniques to enhance your rehabilitation.
Some examples of manual therapy treatment methods that you may receive during your consultation include:
- Soft and deep tissue massage
- Trigger point therapy
- Active release techniques
- Joint mobilisation and manipulation
- Nerve mobilising techniques
- Muscle, joint, and neural stretches
- Active-assisted and Passive range of motion
An essential component of rehabilitation is being able to self-manage your condition. PROHEALTH PHYSIO & FITNESS Physiotherapists will teach you how to perform many of these strategies at home, so that you are maximising your recovery.
