Have you ever felt a muscle that self-twitches? Have you ever pressed on a sore muscle spot and felt a significant amount of pain?
People can often become confused the difference between a muscle spasm and trigger point. Keep reading to obtain a better understanding.
Muscle Spasms & Trigger Points – A muscle spasm is a sudden involuntary muscle contraction that is commonly accompanied by a burst of pain or soreness. Conversely, a trigger point is a small patch of tightly contracted muscle fibre which blocks off its own blood supply.
Trigger points can be caused by numerous factors; such as direct trauma, psychological distress, radiculopathy and more commonly overused muscles.
For an acute muscle spasm or trigger point, it can usually be resolved with physiotherapy within 10 days, but chronic conditions can take longer as they are more complicated in nature. Physiotherapy treatment can involve soft tissue therapy, trigger point release with a lacrosse ball and dry needling.
