Tradies Month encourages all tradies to take the time to pay attention to their health and wellbeing. While this is so important for those that work in the trade industry, lets not forget those that undertake recreational DIY projects outside of their regular job. Physiotherapy can help prevent those DIY projects becoming a painful nightmare.

Tradies Month – It goes without saying to ensure that you use the appropriate safety gear and the equipment you are using is in good working order.

Here are other simple steps you can follow to minimise your risk of sustaining an injury during your DIY project

  1. Make sure you are using good quality tools and equipment to avoid making the job more difficult than it needs to be
  2. Schedule in regular rest, hydrate and stretch breaks. Remember that many people that are not employed in a trade role are not correctly or sufficiently trained up for the physical task being undertaken. As such they are not conditioned to get timely jobs done without breaks
  3.  For bigger jobs that will be tackled over longer periods such as weeks or months, it is a good idea to see a Physio for a screening assessment. The physio will then be able to prescribe an exercise program to help prepare your body for your task

If you have a history of injury, pain or weakness in a particular region of the body; it is recommended to see a Physio to address any ongoing muscle imbalances. Always check if your previous exercises from prior rehabilitation are still sufficient to help minimise the risk of injury or if additional exercises are required. The physio may need to provide some soft tissue and joint release to assist the preparation of your body at the beginning of the job, or maintain your bodies condition during longer projects.
