We get it, everyone is so busy living life these days, people are often seeking life hacks to help them out. Our physios got together & discussed what the key Physio Life Hacks would be & their top suggestions for females and males are in.

Males – Stop sitting on your wallet

Sitting on your wallet causes one side of your hip to be elevated. As a result, your lumbar spine bends to the side that your wallet’s on to compensate.

What’s the issue with this?

  • Excess pressure is placed on one side of your lumbar discs which overtime can compress on to the sciatic nerve, causing back and even leg pain
  • It compresses the piriformis muscle, which is infamous for compressing on the sciatic nerve, causing leg pain
  • Keeping the spine in a prolonged curved position can create muscle and tissue imbalances that can be a precursor to further pain and injury

Females – Limit your use of high heels!

Most ladies aren’t going to like this yet have you ever wondered about the impact of wearing high heels on your body? Although high heels are placed on your feet, the affect it has on your body creates negative changes all the way up to your lower back!

  • Foot – Studies have shown that wearing high heels can increase forefoot pressure by up to 76%. This can lead to changes into bone (i.e. bunions) or thickening of tissue around a nerve between the 3rd and 4th toe (i.e. Morton’s neuroma)
  • Calf – Calf muscles and tendons may adjust to the angle of high heels and shorten and tighten overtime
  • Knee – Knee joint pressures increase by up to 26% when wearing high heels. This may lead to knee pain and degenerative changes overtime.
  • Lower back – High heels change the centre of mass of the body, changing our posture and the natural alignment of your spine.
