Physio + Exercise Deliver Results – The knee anatomy is simply remarkable. It comprises of a complicated network of structures that all work together to stabilise and control the knee. The knee comprises of cartilage between the bones to help with weight bearing and shock absorbing, a chunk of bone (knee cap) at the front to protect the inside structures and help straighten the knee, ligaments to protect the knee and restrict it from abnormal movement and many other significantly important structures.
It is for this reason that when a new client walks in the doors, physiotherapist’s need to conduct a thorough and detailed investigation to assess most / all structures depending on severity.
Today we have a case study to discuss.
Leone has had pain in both knees for 35 years. It is because we provide a holistic view on the body that I asked Leone during her neck consultation if she suffered from other forms of pain in the body. She undoubtedly said yes and since then, we have treated her knees and she is now not complaining of the pains she suffered from for so long.
Here is Leone now to discuss her journey:
Pain is one of those funny things that sometimes we just ignore and tell ourselves is our “normal”. That was me, for 35 of my 45 years I have just claimed I have “dicky knees”. I had a few tests as a pre-teen but nothing was diagnosed so life just went on and I just adjusted everyday life and my exercise routine around the pain. I assumed “one day” I would just have to have a double knee replacement when the pain got too much.
After seeing Michael about bursitis in my shoulder he asked if anything else was bothering me…I jokingly said he could start with my 35 years of knee pain. I laughed when he said injured knees were his favourite and after his initial diagnosis he claimed he could fix them. He sent me off for a MRI to confirm his suspicions and he was right, a meniscus tear and cartilage deficiency. He reassured me that he had a 98% success rate with his method, not used by many other physios.
With twice weekly sessions involving ultrasound treatments, manual adjustments and massage, along with my simple homework exercises and stopping certain activities that may aggravate it, my left knee had been declared “fixed” (i.e. I am no longer feeling pain!!) and my right is only a few weeks behind (it was always my worse knee!).
I am the first to admit I was a huge sceptic, and of course thought I would be in the 2%, however this painless and easy treatment has removed a pain I had “put off” for 35 YEARS as “normal”!!
