With Easter rapidly approaching, it is time for many people to get their camping gear ready for your next escape. The Easter long weekend is very popular for camping, enjoying nature & the basics of life. Aches & stiffness can quickly be a dampener more so than rain.

The most common causes of injuries reported on camping trips are from sunburn, dehydration, blisters, bites and cuts. Often overlooked are the injuries that people sustain from setting up camp, sleeping in a less luxurious bed and generally over doing it for the weekend. As a Physiotherapist it is common to see these post-camping niggles, especially in the neck, back or shoulders. So what can the keen occasional camper do to help safe guard against these aliments without giving up the dream to enjoy the simple life or having to buy the most expensive equipment? Some basic steps you can take to protect yourself from unnecessary strains include:

  1. Check your equipment works and is comfortable before you start packing. This can also allow you to wisely choose the right pillow mattress combination of thickness and firmness for you.
  2. While setting up or packing away camp, take regular stretching breaks especially for the arms, neck and back.
  3. Wear comfortable, supportive shoes and a light, supportive backpack designed for walking if going for a hike is on the agenda.
  4. Be well planned and prepared for your trip so that you can pack what is essential. This will ensure that you don’t over pack and that you have everything you will need.
