Physio Tips To Hit Your Goals – But for many this initial burst of motivation is short lived. You start returning to old habits because they are comfortable… familiar….easy….. But this year is different!
There are numerous strategies people can use to ensure they follow through with their new years resolution. Below is a few important tips to keep you on track!
Expect the best but prepare for the worst!
Motivation like any emotion is constantly changing with constant highs and lows. Whilst you have this current energized behaviour set aside some time to develop a solid action plan.
Write down some achievable goals and develop strategies to overcome periods of low motivation and when you feel like you a slipping back into old behaviour. Good preparation increases the likelihood of making changes.
Make your goals achievable and celebrate every success!
Lost 1kg? Celebrate!
Didn’t eat any chocolate for a week? Celebrate!
Saved $500 more than last month? Celebrate!
Whatever your goal may be, keep it simple, bite size and build your staircase to the heavens step by step instead of making the impossible leap. Yes your goal may seem like a long way out of reach, almost impossible perhaps. But understand that you are in it for the long haul. Habits are hard to form and break. But by celebrating every little success you are developing the foundations for positive lasting change!
Remove barriers that may hinder your goal
Life is challenging, constantly evolving and always throwing you hurdles to overcome.
Finding a routine around work, family, friends, children can all get a little overwhelming and one failure can lead to a cascading spiral down to zero motivation.
Exhausted after a long days work? Exercise in the morning
Can’t find time to cook healthy food? Look into meal prepping for a few days/week
Bills bogging you down, preventing savings? Write down some weekly budgets and identify expenses that could be cut out
Whether your goal is fitness, diet or financial, set aside some time to plan and remove barriers that may be preventing your success!
Routine. Routine!!!
I can’t stress this point enough. Building a positive behaviour into a habit takes work and a lot of time. But the only way to achieve this is by implementing that behaviour every day/week into a routine. Kick yourself out of bed every morning whether you want to exercise or not. As Arnie would say “PUT THAT COOKIE DOWN! NOW!”
Find an accountability buddy!
Tackling goals on your own is tough. Research shows that people who rely on a friend/family/partner to achieve goals together have the highest chance of achieving success. Punish the bad behaviour of your accountability buddy and celebrate each success together! Not only does this make it that much more rewarding for yourself, but it will make you feel that much better knowing your making positive change for your buddy too!
