Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one cause of mortality (death) worldwide. The risk of CVD increases due to unhealthy exercise/dietary habits, obesity, smoking poor physical activity & alcohol use. Running can help reduce the risk of CVD.
A 2014 study observing the effects of leisure running on all cause and cardiovascular mortality in 55,137 adults from 18 to 100 years of age, found that even running for as little as 5 to 10 minutes per day at speeds less than 9 km/ hour (6 miles/ hour), was associated with a reduction in risks of all cause and cardiovascular mortality. Compared to non-runners, leisure runners showed a 29% decrease of all-cause mortality and a 50% decrease in cardiovascular mortality risk.
The simple message is running for as little as 5 to 10 mins can reduce your risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.
