Injuries do not only happen when you do vigorous sports but are also very common at work. Work-related ergonomic injuries arise from risks like poor posture, strain, exertion, pressure, vibration, or extreme temperatures. Whether in an office or a physically demanding job, everyone faces the risk of injury at work
The most common ergonomic injuries are as follows:
- Carpel tunnel syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a wrist disorder caused by compression of the median nerve. People with carpal tunnel syndrome often complain about pain, weakness, tingling and numbness in the hand and wrist. Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by tendon swelling from repetitive wrist bending or awkward posture. Workers who use their hands repeatedly, like typists, assembly line staff, and childcare workers, are especially at risk. The lack of proper workstation setup, including keyboard and mouse, would also elevate the risk for carpal tunnel syndrome.
- Tendinopathy
Tendinopathy is the degeneration of a tendon, which is a thick cord that connects bones and muscles together. It commonly affects the shoulder, elbow, knee, and ankle, often from overuse, repetition, or poor posture. People with tendinopathy often complain about pain, swelling and weakness in the affected area. Pain is more significant when moving against resistance. The later the intervention starts, the poorer the recovery rate and tendon condition are.
- Lower back injuries
Back injuries can result from force, repetitive lifting, twisting, or poor posture from a bad workstation setup. They may damage joints, discs, muscles, nerves, or ligaments, causing anything from backache to leg pain. Beyond physical effects, back pain can also harm psychological health, daily function, and finances
Unaddressed risk factors increase ergonomic injury, burdening workers and employers physically, psychologically, and financially. Even small workplace setup issues can greatly affect health and long-term work sustainability.
