In 2019, National Women’s Health Week is between 2nd – 6th September. This is a week created to encourage women of all ages to dedicate some time and energy towards their mental and physical wellbeing.
Women’s Health Week – Despite having access to one of the best ranked health care systems in the world, the overall health of Australian women still needs much improvement.
- 52% of women reported having a chronic disease in 2015
- 37% of women have experienced violence after they turned 15 years of age
- 45% of those women who gave birth in 2016 were reported as overweight or obese at the time of their initial antenatal appointment
- 43% of women in 2007 reported having experiencing a mental health disorder in their lifetime
- Musculoskeletal conditions such as back pain and osteoarthritis was ranked as the second highest cause of burden amongst women
- 15% of women over the age of 50 years have been diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia (thinning and weakening of the bones)
The focus of Womens Health Week is to remind all women to take the time for themselves and make their health a priority. In the hectic lives of the modern world, many women don’t feel that they have the time to sustain a healthy lifestyle. While it is positive to see that most women over the age of 15 do make time to see their doctor when they have any health concerns, Womens Health Week reminds us that giving more focus to ourselves on a daily basis can go a long way to impact our overall health.
